Teeth Whitening

Stains and discolouration of teeth can put a dent on the self-esteem of some. Having stain-free teeth can add to one’s confidence. There are many reasons for discolouration of teeth or the appearance of stains on them. Regular tobacco chewing, smoking, higher intake of tea, coffee, wine, carbonated drinks etc. can lead to stains on the surface of the teeth. Excess fluoride in water, poor oral hygiene and even after-effects of some medicines may tend to remove the natural shade on the teeth and cause discolouration. Teeth whitening helps improve the colour of teeth. The teeth whitening process is done with bleaching that uses gels and whitening agents. These, along with hydrogen peroxide, causes oxidation that removes stains from the teeth.

The procedure

  • As teeth whitening is a non-painful procedure, anesthetic is not necessary.
  • Whitening gel is applied to the teeth.
  • The teeth are exposed to the light falling from the chairside lamp. The light falling on the whitening gel activates the hydrogen peroxide leading to oxidation.
  • At Medstar, Flashlight Whitening Gel and Flashlight Chairside Whitening Lamp or Zoom Whitening Gel and Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp are used for this purpose.
  • In some cases, laser teeth whitening can also be used instead of whitening gels.
  • Once the teeth whitening process is over, the anti-sensitivity gel is applied for protection.

  • What teeth whitening works?

  • Which teeth whitening kit is the best?

The teeth whitening results are based on the factors like stain density, the habit of consuming pigmented drinks or food and smoking or tobacco chewing. We recommend you consult the dentist before deciding on a home or in-office teeth whitening procedure.

  • Will teeth whitening remove stains?

  • Why teeth whitening doesn’t work?

This is a problem faced by in-home users of teeth whitening kits. In-home teeth whitening kits contain only 10% hydrogen peroxide. 10% hydrogen oxide is not efficient in most cases of teeth whitening. So it is recommended to consult the dentist before opting for any teeth whitening kit.

  • Why teeth whitening causes sensitivity?

The process of teeth whitening opens up the pores of enamel to remove stains. So opened enamel pores cause sensitivity. But in advanced teeth whitening systems anti-sensitivity gel is applied as soon as the teeth whitening is completed to close the enamel pores. Hence reducing the sensitivity.

Teeth whitening systems are safe unless the necessary precautions are followed. Sometimes the use of in-home teeth whitening kits without consulting the dentist can result in damage to gums and tongue and extreme tooth sensitivity.
