  • A breast augmentation procedure is used to increase the size of the breasts. It can be done by using breast implants or by fat transfer/fat grafting.
  • Breast implants: Saline and silicone gel implants are used as breast implants. These are:
    • Saline-filled implants are made up of silicone shells filled with saline (sterile saltwater). They come as pre-filled or are filled during the surgery.
    • Silicone implants are silicone shells filled with silicone. Silicone gel implants feel more like real breasts than saline but they have more risk, if they leak or rupture.
    • Both saline and silicone implants come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells.
  • In this procedure, the plastic surgeon will make a single cut (incision) in the crease under the breast (inframammary), or underarm (axillary) or around the nipple (periareolar). Through this incision, the surgeon will separate breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of the chest, creating a pocket. The implant is inserted into this pocket and centres it on the nipple area. In the case of saline-filled implants, they are inserted empty and then filled with sterile salt water after positioning. After implant placement, the incision is closed with sutures and bandaged with skin adhesive and surgical tape.
  • In case of fat transfer, fat is removed from fatty areas of the patient like thighs or stomach by liposuction. This fat is cleaned and separated from other body fluids and injected into the breast to increase its size. Full results can be seen 2-3 months after the fat cells settle.

  • The technique used for breast lift by the plastic surgeon determines the location of the incisions and the post-surgery scars.
  • In this procedure, incisions are made around the areola or extending downward from the areolae to the breast creases or horizontally along the breast creases. Excess breast skin is removed and nipples are shifted to higher positions. Deep stitches are placed deep within breasts to reshape the breast tissue and, if necessary, the size of areolae is reduced. Then the breast skin is pulled together and incisions are closed with stitches, surgical tape, or skin adhesives.
  • The procedure takes two to three hours, and the patient can go home on the same day.

In the breast reduction procedure, through incisions, the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to reduce the size of the breasts. Breasts are reshaped, nipple-areola is repositioned, and incisions are closed with sutures, surgical tapes or skin adhesives. In some cases, liposuction is also used for removing the fat from the breasts.

The patient will be advised to:

  • Wear a compression bandage or sports bra for support and positioning of the breast implants.
  • Patients will be able to return to work within a few weeks.
  • Avoid strenuous activity, straining, bending, and lifting for at least two weeks.
  • Common complications like swelling, bruising, soreness and numbness might last for 4- 6 weeks and medications will be prescribed by the surgeon to help in relieving such complications.
  • Patients will be advised to use silicone tape or gel on their incisions to promote healing.
  • Instructions will be given by the surgeon to promote normal and fast healing. Also, patients will be instructed on how to take care of the wound's bandage and drainage pipes.
  • In the follow-up visit, the surgeon will remove stitches and check the healing process.
  • Contact your surgeon as soon as possible in case of redness, soreness, fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain is experienced by the patient.

Breast cosmetic surgery can change the size and shape of the breasts and can improve the body image and self-esteem of the patient. Red and lumpy scars will fade away in 2 to 3 weeks. Scars will not disappear but can be easily hidden by bra or bathing suits. In most cases, the results can be seen instantly after the surgery, but it will take 3-6 months for the final results to show. The final results are long-lasting however the shape and size of the breast can change due to ageing and weight gain or loss. A successful and safe cosmetic breast surgery results in firmer and rounder breasts with a boost in the confidence of the patient.

How often do you have to redo the breast implants?

It is recommended to replace breast silicone or saline-filled breast implants after 10 years. In some cases, they might need to get replaced or removed due to ageing, pregnancy, and weight fluctuation as these factors can affect the size of the breasts. Also, if the implant is leaking or there is an infection. Always choose a certified plastic surgeon for safe results.

What is breast augmentation with fat grafting?

Breast augmentation with fat grafting is the latest procedure to increase the size of the breasts without breast implants. In this procedure, fat is obtained from the fatty part of the patient like the arms, thighs, or stomach and is injected into the breasts. This procedure is relatively safer than breast implants and the results are fuller natural-looking breasts.

Will breast reduction remove stretch marks?

Stretch marks are caused by weight gain or weight loss as skin loses elasticity. Breasts can also get stretch marks due to loose skin and can be reduced by breast reduction or breast lift surgery. If stretch marks are present on the skin removed by these surgeries, then there is a significant reduction in the stretch marks on breasts.

Is breast reduction surgery painful?

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and like any other surgical procedure, common post-surgery complications are expected like pain, swelling, soreness, redness, and bleeding. These complications subside in a few weeks. Patients are advised to follow the instructions strictly and take the medications regularly to ease these common complications.

Will breast reduction affect breastfeeding?

Breast reduction is the surgical removal of fat, skin, and breast tissues. Removal of breast tissues affects milk production in the breasts. So yes, it will affect breastfeeding. An experienced surgeon will not recommend breast reduction surgery in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always inform the surgeon about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or plans of pregnancy.

Will breast lift reduce the size?

In most cases of breast lift surgery, a reduction in the size of the breast is observed by the patient. This happens due to the removal of excess saggy skin resulting in tighter and firmer breasts post-surgery. Breast lift helps in tightening and repositioning breasts only; it does not change the size of the breasts.

What kind of breast lift do I need?

The type and technique of breast lift required by the patient are determined by the surgeon based on the factors like age, the elasticity of the skin, weight, and overall medical condition of the patient. It also depends on the experience of the surgeon who knows well what will be the best option for the patient as per the desired results.

Are breast lift scars worth it?

With the natural-looking results, breast-lift comes with the complication of scars. These surgical scars are red and slightly above the normal skin surface. These scars will fade slowly with time, but they might not disappear completely. Also, the incisions are made in such a way that the scars are not visible directly or can easily hide under the bras or bathing suits. It is the responsibility of the surgeon to explain the outcomes of the surgery, including surgical scars before the surgery.
