What is Circumcision?

  • Circumcision is the surgical procedure of removing the foreskin of the penis. The foreskin is the skin covering the tip of the penis.
  • This procedure is not age-related and can be performed on either infant or an adult male.

What Are the Reasons for circumcision?

  • Family traditions
  • Personal hygiene
  • Recurring penis infections
  • The tight or big foreskin of the penis prone to infections
  • To prevent sexually transmitted diseases

What are the Benefits of Circumcision?

Circumcision has the following benefits:
  • Reduced risk of urinary tract infections

Circumcised infants get fewer urinary tract infections, especially in the initial year of life.

Scientific studies show that UTIs are 10 times more common in uncircumcised males than circumcised males.

Also preventing severe urinary tract infections through circumcision helps in preventing future kidney infections.

  • Better personal hygiene

A circumcised penis is easy to clean resulting in better personal hygiene.

  • Reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases:

Circumcision reduces the risk of certain sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Even after circumcision, all safe sexual practices remain an absolute necessity.

It will reduce the risk of STDs only and do not eliminate the chances of getting infected sexually.

  • Reduced risk of penile infections

Penis infection problems, such as irritation, inflammation, and microbic infections, are less common and less recurring in circumcised males.

  • Decreased risk of penile cancer:

Cancer of the penis is also less common in circumcised men.

Cancer of the cervix was found to be less common in female partners of circumcised men.

What are the Risks associated with Circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure and like any other surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with circumcision as well.
The main complications of circumcision are:
  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Side effects of anaesthesia in rare cases
  • If the foreskin is trimmed too short or left too long, it can result in additional issues and complications of the foreskin.
  • Circumcision scars as wound healing complication
  • Improper reattachment of the foreskin can be very uncomfortable and may require redo surgery.
But there is no effect on the fertility or sexual function of the males.

Are You Eligible for circumcision? When to see the doctor?

For the circumcision procedure, there are no specific requirements. It is not age-specific. But the chances of post-surgery complications are more in older patients of circumcision.
If the patient is suffering from recurrent infections of the penis or due to foreskin shape or size, personal hygiene becomes difficult to maintain, visit the doctor for consultation. The doctor will guide you for further treatment option as per the condition.

How is Circumcision done?

  • The circumcision procedure requires anaesthesia. Under anaesthesia, the surgeon will free the foreskin of the penis from the head of the penis and clip off the excess foreskin. The surgeon will reattach the remaining section of skin to create a shorter section of skin.
  • This procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes in infants and heals in 7-10 days. In boys and adult’s circumcision procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes and complete healing takes 10-15 days.

What are the Circumcision options at MedStar?

ALISKLAMP

  • Treatment of Circumcision is done by an advanced circumcision technique. In this technique, a new generation disposable circumcision clamp device called ALISKLAMP is used.
  • In this procedure, the surgeon will clean the area and give local anaesthesia. During the procedure, the plastic tube part of ALISKLAMP is placed over the glans penis to secure it and the extra foreskin is pulled over the plastic tube. The clamp part of ALISKLAMP is fixed on the plastic tube over the foreskin towards the base of the penis. This strangulates the foreskin at a 360-degree angle making a clean cut on the extra foreskin which is on the tube. Clean cut removes the extra foreskin.
  • This technique is extremely simple, safe, virtually bloodless and painless with a faster wound healing rate.
  • After this procedure patient can go home the same day.

LASER-ASSISTED CIRCUMCISION

  • In this simple and quick procedure, lasers are used for removing the foreskin of the penis under anaesthesia.
  • This procedure is safe, quick, scarless and with minimum post-circumcision complications of bleeding and pain.
  • This procedure has an excellent healing rate and the patient can go home the same day.

Postoperative care instructions are:

  • Keep the area as clean as possible with warm water only.
  • To prevent sensitive glans penis problem in babies it is advised to put a dab of petroleum jelly on the baby’s penis or the front of the diaper for 3 to 5 days. This eases the discomfort caused by friction against the diaper.
  • Adult males or boys are advised to apply an anti-bacterial cream for up to a week. After healing wash the penis with soap and water during bathing.
  • In the case of adults, sex must be avoided till the wound heals.

Contact your doctor if you face:

  • Continuous bleeding
  • Increasing redness and swelling of the penis
  • Normal urination does not resume in 12 hours after the procedure
  • Pus-like discharge from the surgical wound
  • Fever
  • Painful urination after wound healing

Successful circumcision treatment results in a reduced risk of several infections and better personal hygiene for our male patients. Our MEDSTAR clinical team is highly experienced and skilled in performing same-day circumcision procedures resulting in faster recovery and minimum post-surgery complications.

Will circumcision affect fertility in males?

No, circumcision will not affect fertility in males. It is the simple procedure of removing extra foreskin covering the tip of the penis. The foreskin is not associated with male fertility. Removing the foreskin helps in reducing the risk of infections in males like urinary tract infections, STDs, recurring infections and helps in maintaining better personal hygiene.

Which age is suitable for circumcision?

Circumcision can be done in infants, boys and adults. It is not an age-specific procedure. But the circumcision procedure in infants takes less time for the whole procedure ( about 10 minutes ) and less healing time ( about 5-7 days ).

In adults, this procedure can take 30- 60 minutes and can take 10-15 days to heal completely.

The final results of the procedure are the same and equally effective, irrespective of the age of the patient.

Can foreskin of penis regrow?

No, the foreskin of the penis cannot regrow after the circumcision procedure. In the circumcision procedure, after removing the excess of the foreskin of the penis, the remaining short skin is reattached to the penis below the tip of the penis. There is no chance of the remaining foreskin regrowth with age.

What helps a circumcision wound heal faster?

After circumcision in infants on the tip of the penis, petroleum jelly is applied to decrease the sensitivity and protect the glans penis from irritation due to diaper friction.

Adults or boys are advised to change the dressing regularly and clean the wound regularly. Sexual activity must be avoided till the complete healing of the penis. After healing regular and proper personal hygiene must be maintained.

What are the complications of circumcision?

The main complications of circumcision are:

● Pain and bleeding

● Infection of the surgical wound

● Side effects of anaesthesia in rare cases

● If the foreskin is trimmed too short or left too long, it can result in additional issues and complications of the foreskin.

● Circumcision scars as wound healing complication

● Improper reattachment of the foreskin can be very uncomfortable and may require more surgery.

Is circumcision painful?

The circumcision procedure is painless as it is performed under the effect of anaesthesia but after this procedure, the patient might feel mild pain. For this post-surgery pain, medications and medicated dressings are prescribed by the doctor and the patient is advised to keep the area clean and dry.

In case of severe pain with or without discharge of blood, consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Is it a bloodless and painless procedure?

Yes, ALISKLAMP is nearly a bloodless and painless procedure. In this procedure, the foreskin of the penis is pressed at a 360 angle which also presses the nerves and blood vessels resulting in a painless and bloodless circumcision. After the circumcision procedure, there might be some bleeding and pain at the site of the wound for which medications and topical dressings are prescribed by the surgeon.

In the case of laser procedure, lasers are used for safe, precise, almost painless and bloodless circumcision.
