What are dental implants?

Dental implants are permanent dental prostheses that are placed into the bone of the jaws. They are made up of biocompatible materials which are safe for the human body and get fused to the jaw bone. They are fixed and do not move or get loose on biting or chewing.

Dental implants are screw-like prosthesis made up of biocompatible materials like titanium, titanium alloy, zirconia etc. These materials have the property of integrating with the bone. It has 3 parts:

  • Implant post: It is the part placed inside the jaw bone which gets fused with the bone over a period of time. This part is invisible
  • Abutment: This part is fixed on the implant post healing and is slightly visible before the crown placement
  • Crown: This part resembles the natural tooth structure and is fixed on the abutment

Causes of the missing tooth

Missing teeth is the most common dental condition affecting the smile making it look highly unaesthetic. Several causes are responsible for the missing tooth:

  • Tooth extraction: The most common cause of tooth extraction is an extremely decayed tooth. Only roots of the tooth are left after the decay which is extracted to avoid any future infection. Reinfected endodontically treated teeth are also extracted to stop the spread of infection.
  • Periodontal disease: These are gum diseases resulting in heavy teeth mobility. This causes the teeth to finally fall off.
  • Severe trauma to the tooth:  results in the falling off the teeth.
  • Dental anomalies like cyst associated with tooth also require tooth extraction for the treatment of cyst.
  • Sometimes tooth extraction can be a result of a lack of patient awareness.

Effects of the missing tooth

  • Unaesthetic smile
  • Wrinkles in cheeks and lips areas since missing teeth decrease the fullness of cheeks and lips
  • Shifting of teeth towards the gap resulting in midline shift
  • Pain, swelling and infection of toothless gums due to repeated trauma
  • Decrease in the bone thickness and height of the toothless gums

When to see the dentist?

Visiting the dental office is a good option if you are experiencing:

  • Regular trauma to the gums of the missing tooth while eating
  • Decreased chewing and biting function
  • Shifting of the adjacent teeth towards the space leading to misalignment of teeth
  • Resorption of the jaw bone, resulting in decreased height and thickness of toothless gums
  • Unaesthetic smile
  • Decreased fullness of cheeks and lips resulting in wrinkles and aged look of the face
  • Inability to wear removable denture irrespective of well defined toothless gums
  • Falling dentures and ill-fitting dentures.

Who should consider dental implants? Who is eligible for a dental implant?

  • Anyone with a missing tooth can go for a dental implant. There is no specific tooth requirement, any tooth can be replaced by a dental implant.
  • The eligibility for a dental implant is a healthy jaw bone with a certain thickness of the jawbone. These are required for the successful fusing of implants to the jaw bone. Bone grafts are used for improving the quality of jaw bone in case it does not meet the standard dental requirement. The jaw bone is evaluated by the dentist before planning dental implants.
  • Also, dental hygiene habits, smoking, bone affecting medicines and medical conditions like diabetes and osteoporosis, are considered before finalising the dental implants. These factors can lead to infection and failure of the dental implant.
  • The final dental implant treatment plan is determined by our dentist based on the case presented by the patient.

How do you do a dental implant procedure?

  • A dental implant procedure is a multi-step procedure. After the evaluation and examination of the jaw bone, the type of dental implant procedure is selected considering various factors like the strength of the jaw bone, patient requirement, budget and others.
  • Irrespective of the type of dental implants, the procedure begins with injecting local anaesthesia, The implants post part is placed inside the jaw bone by drilling and cutting the gums.
  • Then an abutment is fixed on the implant post-part at the level of the gums. In the final step, the crown or bridge is fixed on the abutment. After the procedure, a dental implant is left to heal and fuse with the bone of the jaw.
  • Generally, dental implants take multiple appointments with several days gap in between the appointments. To save the time and hassle of multiple visits we have a same-day implants option available at MEDSTAR.

Various dental implant options

  • Same-day dental implants: As the name suggests, these implants require one day for all the steps. Same-day dental implants are convenient, efficient and time-saving. Placing the implant post, fixing abutment to post and fixing the crown or the bridge on abutment are completed on the same day by the use of CBCT and 3D print crowns and bridges.

CBCT helps in reconstructing the jaw digitally and helps in evaluating the future success of the implant. 3D print crowns or bridges help in completing the final step of the same day implant. By this technique, same-day crowns or bridges are prepared in the dental office.

If tooth extraction is required before the implant placement, it can be done on the same day too.

  • Conventional dental implants: Conventional dental implants require multiple dental office visits. Every step of the implant procedure is done in separate visits. After placing the implant rod it is left to heal for around 2 to 3 months. Then according to the healing process abutment and crown are fixed to it.

  • After finalising the dental implant treatment, bone grafting is done before placing the implant into the bone if it is required. Bone grafting is needed in the cases of thin bone or bone resorption for the success of the dental implant.
  • During the dental implant procedure follow up appointments are scheduled to track the progress in the healing of the bone.
  • Post dental implant, follow-up appointments are required to maintain the results and to check for signs of infection which can occur for many reasons.

After a dental implant, it takes 3 to 5 months for the implant to completely heal and fuse with the bone. This results in a permanent fixed replacement of the missing tooth and a new confident smile. In the case of a same-day dental implant, the healing period is shorter comparatively.

Are dental implants painful?

It may be painful for a few days post-surgery for which the dentist will prescribe pain killers. It is not painful in the long run as the implants are made up of biocompatible material which fuses with the jaw bone and results in a fixed permanent solution for a missing tooth.

What are same-day dental implants?
