The thyroid controls and manages our body’s systems by creating hormones. The thyroid is a gland located in the neck that controls vital functions in the body. Sometimes, when the thyroid makes more or less of these hormones, bodily functions get affected and give way to thyroid diseases. Thyroid diseases have to be managed and controlled for an active and stress–free life.
Types of thyroid disease
- Hyperthyroidism :
This is a condition where the thyroid makes and releases high levels of the hormone. This causes a faster heartbeat, high anxiety, and weight loss.
- Hypothyroidism :
In this condition, thyroid does not create and release enough hormone into the blood. This can cause fatigue, weight gain, and more such issues.
- Thyroiditis :
The thyroid gland inflames and can lower the number of hormones produced by the gland.
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis :
It is an autoimmune disease, where the body cells attack the thyroid.
Diagnosis and Treatments
Thyroid disease can be diagnosed with blood tests and imaging tests. Physical examination of the person can also reveal the existence of thyroid disease. Treatments involve medications and in some cases, surgery too. Below are some of the most common treatment modalities:
- Anti-thyroid medicines like methimazole and propylthiouracil.
- Beta-blockers help relieve the symptoms of thyroid disease.
- Surgical removal of the thyroid, known as thyroidectomy that will stop creating hormones. After which, thyroid replacement hormones will have to be taken for the rest of the life.
